To me, in a crowd of similar books this one stands out! Field's is even ballsy enough to write from his POV at times and it's brilliant. He has an actual diagnosis and his behaviour realistically follows the symptoms of his condition. 🔴 Fergus' character - He's crazy but it goes beyond that. 🔴 The final scene - TERRIFYING!! I was genuinely scared. The kid usually sounds like an immature adult or an annoying child but here it was convincing. A difficult age for an author to write as. There was a couple of times I thought the author was adding things to impress me with her knowledge of the subject, but that was fine with me because I WAS impressed. Connie's a psychologist and it shows all throughout the book. 🔴 Connie's character - You know how sometimes a character will have a profession that's irrelevant because it's not part of the story's plot? Not the case here. These are my reasons for why it deserves five stars. That's why I wasn't expecting to be WOWed with this one. I think I've read four books this year where a bad guy keeps a woman prisoner.

It follows forensic psychologist Connie, who's teamed up with Detective Baarda to locate kidnap victim Elspeth.Įlspeth's been taken by mentally ill Fergus and it's a race against time to save her.

(Jan.I'm surprised by how shockingly GOOD this book is! Agent: Madeleine Milburn, Madeleine Milburn Literary (U.K.). Though Tudor makes a couple of rookie missteps, including excessive plot twists seemingly for the sake of surprise, her storytelling prowess is undeniable. Danger looms after Mickey announces that he knows who really killed the girl (the prime suspect killed himself before his likely arrest). In 2016, Mickey, one of Eddie’s old friends, returns to town after more than 20 years away, planning to write a book about the girl’s murder upon the occasion of the murder’s 30th anniversary. Not surprisingly, these traumas, which also include abuse, sadistic bullying, and a prank that turns deadly, cast a sizeable shadow over the friends’ futures.

In the most shocking episode, a mysterious man leads them to the dismembered remains of a teenage girl in the woods. In 1986, Eddie Adams, the narrator of British author Tudor’s promising debut, and his four best mates, all early adolescents, become ensnared in a series of ghastly events in the picturesque English town of Anderbury, with the nightmarish inevitability of the Grimmest of tales.
